HWA Attorneys to Speak at University of Houston Seminars
in Houston and Dallas

HOUSTON (July 26, 2007) - Hughes Watters Askanase L.L.P. (HWA) partner Dominique Varner and of counsel attorney Janet Northrup will be speaking at the University of Houston Law Foundation's Collecting Debts and Judgments seminar Aug. 16-17 in Houston. Varner and HWA associate Brendetta Scott also will be speaking at the Collecting Debts and Judgments seminar in Dallas Aug. 23-24.

HWA, which is based in Houston, has extensive bankruptcy experience in addition to experience in real estate, litigation, corporate transactions and consumer finance.

Attendees of the Collecting Debts and Judgments seminar will qualify for 12 hours of mandatory continuing legal education credit, including two hours of ethics and professional responsibility, and Texas Board of Legal Specialization approval in bankruptcy and consumer law.

These seminars target attorneys in civil practice and provide a practical learning experience, including detailed instruction on the collection of debts before suit, during litigation and after judgment.

Northrup and Scott will share insights on how to continue the collection effort after a bankruptcy filing, and Varner will provide perspectives on sequestration, attachment and pre-judgment garnishment seizure before suit.

"Speaking at seminars in academic settings, such as the University of Houston, allows speakers, as well as attendees, to explore new issues and stay updated as the law evolves and changes," said Northrup. "Participating in this program also gives Hughes Watters Askanase the opportunity to share our expertise in bankruptcy and increases awareness and visibility for the firm."

With more than 25 years of experience in bankruptcy law, Northrup is recognized as one of the top consumer bankruptcy experts in Texas and has been named a Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly magazine.

Focusing her practice on creditor's rights and bankruptcy law, Varner has represented a wide variety of lenders and was conferred membership in the Order of the Lytae, an honorary fraternity prior to graduating from South Texas College of Law in 1994.  She also was board certified in consumer bankruptcy law in 2006.

Scott has focused her practice on mortgage law, bankruptcy, credit union law and default servicing (foreclosures and evictions), and was named a 2007 Rising Star Texas Super Lawyer. For full biographical profiles on Northrup, Varner and Scott, please visit
