CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Randy Elkins has almost 40 years of legal, banking, finance and entrepreneurial experience. He joined Hughes Watters Askanase in 2008 in a special counsel role after an eight-year hiatus from the legal profession. During that time, he was managing partner of Commerce Funding Group, LLP, a privately owned investment company having interests in the insurance, real estate, software and manufacturing industries.
In the 1970's, Randy served as vice president in the commercial loan department of Texas Commerce Bank, predecessor to JP Morgan Chase. He began his legal career as a solo practitioner in 1978 and eventually formed Elkins & Yount, PC where he practiced banking and creditors' rights law. In 1995, Randy and the other attorneys of Elkins & Yount joined the Houston office of Baker & Hostetler, a 600 attorney firm headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. While a partner at that firm, Randy acquired board certification in commercial real estate law and concentrated his practice in the representation of real estate developers, owners and lenders. He left Baker & Hostetler in 2000 to pursue entrepreneurial interests with Commerce Funding Group.
Randy was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1975 and is licensed to practice in the United States District Court, Southern District of Texas and the Supreme Court of Texas.
CLIENT EXPERIENCE
Randy's experience is focused primarily in the areas of real estate and finance. He provides transactional counsel to financial institutions and other clients of the firm involved in complex real estate and debtor-creditor transactions. He also is actively engaged in business development activities for the firm, focusing his efforts on raising awareness of the firm's capabilities among the real estate and financial community.
Randy's experience includes:
- Representation of individual and business debtors in negotiating their way through hundreds of millions of dollars of debt.
- Representation of institutional lenders in documenting and collecting billions of dollars of debt.
- Representation of public retirement funds in multiple real estate transactions valued in excess of $2 billion.
- Representation of a cellular telephone company in acquiring more than 400 cellular tower locations in the Southern region of the United States.
- Outside general counsel to a startup software company from inception through three rounds of financing...eventual market cap >$1 billion.
- Representation of developers, owners, lenders, purchasers and sellers of all varieties of commercial real estate.
