Lauren Korshalla joined Hughes Watters Askanase LLP in 2018.  Lauren began her legal career as a patent agent at a boutique intellectual property law firm while attending law school, transitioning to become a patent attorney.  Much of her work at the time centered on patent prosecution, primarily in the area of biologics and pharmaceuticals, where she utilized practical laboratory experience to further her clients’ interests in obtaining protection for their technology.  She represented domestic clients seeking international patent protection, and foreign clients seeking U.S. protection, partnering with foreign law firms to achieve these objectives.  During this time, she also gained experience in transactional intellectual property work, drafting licenses, joint venture agreements, and other corporate documents.

After moving to Texas, Lauren worked for another Houston area firm, where she served clients’ disparate transactional business needs.  She managed the trademark docket for the firm, advised clients on unfair competition matters and other IP matters, and filed applications for copyright registration; she also served clients in other transactional capacities, creating complex partnership agreements, manufacturing agreements, and advising on regulatory issues.

Lauren’s client experience involves over ten years assisting industry, academics, individuals, and small and mid-sized businesses, with emphasis as follows:

  • Intellectual Property (in the past, prosecuting patents, currently, transactional work with copyrights and trademarks, including prosecution and the writing of opinion letters; also copyright, unfair competition, and trademark litigation)
  • Licensing (drafting and litigation)
  • Employment contracts, non-compete and non-disclosure agreements
  • Wide range of business contract negotiation, creation, and review
  • Business formation and wrapping up
  • Simple real estate matters
  • Business Litigation (encompassing a variety of matters, including contract disputes, collections on contracts and suits on sworn account, business divorces, DTPA violations, construction disputes, maritime disputes, actions for professional malpractice, and collaterally, some personal injury and workers’ compensation matters)
  • Miscellaneous transactional and regulatory work pertaining to Food and Drug Law, data privacy and protection, import-export regulations, advertising, and government contracts.
