CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Joel Kay has been practicing law for almost 47 years. He joined Hughes Watters Askanase in 2001 in an of counsel role after the dissolution of Sheinfeld, Maley and Kay, PC. He joined HWA because the firm provides a positive environment and essentional support to continue to practice law.

After serving in the U.S. Army for eighteen months and achieving the rank of captain, Joel began his career as a lawyer in 1963 when he worked in Washington, D.C., with the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. In that position, he traveled throughout the nation and worked in both state and federal courts while representing the Internal Revenue Service. From 1967 through 1969, Joel served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of Texas.

From 1969 through July 2001, Joel was a partner with Sheinfeld, Maley and Kay, P.C., one of the nation's top-ranked bankruptcy firms for many years. This firm that Joel helped to launch at one time employed 85 attorneys and operated offices in Austin, Dallas and Houston.

Joel was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1961. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals - Fifth Circuit, U.S. District Courts (Southern District of Texas, Western District of Texas, and Southern District of Alabama).

CLIENT EXPERIENCE

Joel has a combined background and experience in accounting and corporate finance, litigation, management, and tax and commercial law with a focus on commercial bankruptcy and reorganization. The application of this background has occurred in the representation of debtors, creditors, trustees, investors and asset purchasers in both judicial proceedings under the federal Bankruptcy Code and non-judicial reorganizations and compositions. These representations have been in the context of a wide and diverse variety of industry settings, including manufacturing and retailing of hard and soft goods, service providers, technology development, communications, real estate development and construction, transportation, oil and gas production and refining.  A sampling of representations is reflected in approximately thirty reported court opinions.
